Hurricane season can be a stressful time for homeowners, especially if they live in areas prone to high winds and flooding. However, there are some steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of damage and protect your property and family. Here are 10 tips to prepare your home for hurricane season:

  1. Check your roof and gutters. Make sure your roof is in good condition and free of leaks or loose shingles. Clean your gutters and downspouts to prevent clogging and water damage.
  2. Trim your trees and shrubs. Remove any dead or weak branches that could fall on your house or power lines during a storm. Cut back any vegetation that is too close to your windows or doors.
  3. Secure your windows and doors. Install storm shutters or plywood boards to cover your windows and glass doors. Reinforce your garage door with braces or straps to prevent it from blowing in or out.
  4. Move outdoor furniture and items indoors. Anything that can be picked up by strong winds, such as patio furniture, grills, trash cans, or potted plants, should be stored inside your house or garage. Tie down any large or heavy items that cannot be moved, such as swing sets or sheds.
  5. Review your insurance policy. Make sure you have adequate coverage for your home and belongings in case of a hurricane. Know what your deductible is and what is covered or excluded by your policy. Take photos or videos of your property and inventory your possessions for documentation purposes.
  6. Prepare an emergency kit. Stock up on essential supplies, such as water, food, batteries, flashlights, radio, first aid kit, medications, cash, and important documents. Keep your kit in a safe and accessible place in case you need to evacuate or shelter in place.
  7. Plan an evacuation route. Know where you will go and how you will get there if you have to leave your home due to a hurricane. Have a map and a list of contacts for family, friends, or shelters in your area. Keep a full tank of gas in your car and pack some essentials in case you have to leave quickly.
  8. Stay informed and alert. Monitor the weather forecasts and alerts from local authorities and follow their instructions. Know the difference between a hurricane watch (conditions are possible within 48 hours) and a hurricane warning (conditions are expected within 36 hours). Be ready to act if a hurricane is approaching.
  9. Protect your pets and animals. If you have pets or livestock, make sure they have enough food, water, and shelter. Bring them indoors if possible or secure them in a safe place. Have a carrier, leash, collar, tags, and medical records for each pet in case you have to evacuate with them.
  10. Stay calm and safe. Hurricanes can be scary and stressful, but try not to panic or lose hope. Follow the safety tips above and listen to the experts. Remember that you are not alone and that help is available if you need it.
